Ferdinand Cheval’s Le Palais Ideal or “Ideal Palace” (Hauterives, France)

A man who lacked any architectural background whatsoever called Ferdinand Cheval is a rural postman. Via pocket, basket and wheelbarrow throughout a 33 year period, he collected all the individual stones necessary to create his elaborate carved limestone and shell studded structure. He finally completed his outstandingly quirky monument just a year before his death in 1924 at 88 years old by incorporating a bizarre conglomeration of architectural styles inspired by Biblical and Hindu mythology as well as Northern European, Chinese and Algerian elements. One of the most outstanding examples of “naïve art” architecture, France’s most beloved cultural landmark, and also France’s weirdest architecture in this building are Grottos, flying buttresses and statues of animal collide.
